Abstract
This chapter describes the methods to prepare various sample types for the analysis for metals. Wet and dry digestion processes, including microwave and ultrasonic techniques are covered. Preparation and concentration techniques such as solid phase extractions and precipitation methods are described. Techniques employed in speciation of metals in samples are discussed, as well as sample preparation methods specific to particular analytical techniques such as slurry injection atomic absorbance, hydride generation, and cold vapor analysis. Colorimetric methods are listed. Finally, safe handling practices for the reagents involved, especially strong acids and oxidants, as well as techniques to avoid sample contamination are detailed.
