Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the various sample/substrate preparation techniques used to obtain enhancements of the conventional Raman effect up to about 15 orders of magnitude. At this sensitivity, detection of fingerprint spectra at single molecule levels can be obtained. A brief discussion of the current understanding of the surface enhanced Raman effect is provided together with a brief overview of surface-enhanced infrared absorption. Finally, examples of the potential application of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to bio-and explosive vapor-detection are presented.
