Abstract
Despite intense recent interest, real network experimental data on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is sorely lacking. MANETs differ considerably from wired networks; their topologies may change rapidly while their links can have small bandwidths and relatively high bit error rates. These properties make it difficult to conduct controlled, repeatable research and development experiments. To address this problem, we have developed the hardware switch software router (HSSR) MANET emulation platform that connects multiple unaltered hosts according to a configurable dynamic topology with controllable bandwidth and packet error rate on the links. The HSSR emulates a MANET using standard Ethernet physical connections. A series of validation experiments were conducted and described here on packet error rate and bandwidth allocation on the network links. The results showed that these parameters were configurable and controllable. Thus, the HSSR provides researchers with a flexible and configurable facility to experiment with routing and other protocols and applications in a MANET.
