Abstract
Communities of Practice provide a means for individuals and organizations to support both learning and performance by its members. This paper identifies factors that are critical to the success of Communities of Practice, particularly as contrasted with Virtual Communities and Knowledge Networks. A model is proposed to structure further discussion and research about how Communities of Practice may grow and thrive over time. Discussion of the model leads to the presentation of a number of candidate topics for further research. © 2003 IEEE.
