Abstract

The heat pump system is a method for controlling internal environment by heating, cooling and dehumidifying. The conventional vapor compression heat pump has advantages over other systems where the cost of electricity is favorable compared to other energy sources and the range of external environmental temperatures is confined to moderate bounds. These limitations imposed by energy costs and environmental factors are considered and an extended range heat pump system is described which improves the performance and temperature range. The energy and environmental considerations in the evaluation of a heat pump system for a range of applicability is described by thermodynamic energy methods. The limitations imposed by an increase in the temperature difference between the internal and external environments are shown. An extended range heat pump system which overcomes these limitations is analyzed and the potential of this improved system is explored.
