Abstract

Nanoceramic is defined as a ceramic particle having its dimensions in nanometers. The development of nanoceramics for medicine is accelerating as they are economic, lightweight, smart, and strong. In this book chapter, the following applications of nanoceramics in the biomedical industry are discussed: nanoscaffolds, bone tissue engineering, incorporation of stem cells, bone replacement applications, and simulated body fluids. In addition, nanocoatings and surface modifications are also covered. Nanoceramics, when used as a coating on an implant, provide quick bone attachment or biological fixation. Removal of a virus from blood can be achieved by designing a system using nanoporous ceramic membranes, fibers, or nanoparticles. Currently, nanoceramics have gained much attention as carriers for drug delivery. Ceramic microspheres are made commercially for use in in situ radiotherapy. Toxicity is the biggest hurdle. However, by modification of the properties, nanoceramics can be considered as a boon for the biomedical industry.
