Abstract

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are functional and highly cross-linked materials that show excellent recognition behavior, sensitivity, and selectivity toward the target molecules. MIPs can be successfully used in a variety of fields such as sensors, catalysis, drug delivery, bioimaging, separation, purification, etc. Although we benefit from them in multiple areas, their synthesis can have negative impacts on the environment. In order to mitigate these effects, various strategies can be employed. Some of the strategies and techniques that can be used for the preparation of green MIPs are microwave-assisted synthesis, supercritical fluid technology, ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, ultrasound assisted synthesis, and environmentally friendly precursors for molecular imprinting (i.e., green templates, functional monomers, and solvents). This chapter presents and discusses the green approaches for the preparation of MIPs. These approaches are briefly described and various interesting examples on the design and development MIPs based on green approaches are also highlighted.
